Payin’ The Man – Tax Day 2010

girevoy sport, kettlebell instruction, strength training“The current tax code is a daily mugging” ~ Ronald Reagan

Today was the deadline to file your taxes.  Hopefully you got them done in time and with luck broke even or maybe you’re getting some money back.

I’m going to stay away from the hard sell today, as you’re going to be bombarded with sales pitches to get you to spend your hard-earned money on all kinds of crap.  So I’m going to go against the grain and gently remind you to look forward and think about what the best investment for your tax refund might be.

Keep Moving Forward

Yesterday (Wednesday), my wife and I did a level 7 1/2 Long Islander. Due to her missing a couple workouts, I didn’t think she’d be ready for level 8 yet, so I split the difference and made it a 7 1/2.  So instead of 1:00 rest periods, we did 45 second rest periods.  Level 8 rest periods are 30 seconds long.

We took about 37 minutes from start to finish to complete our workout and we’ll do level 8 on Friday or Saturday to finish out the week.  The one-arm work is great to think about different components of each lift, especially the ones that apply to the competition lifts, such as the lock-out, rack, elbow position, and economy of movement.

Assistance Work

Once a week I like to try to get in some barbell or dumbbell work as a way to supplement my basic strength and to use different muscles and movement patterns as a way to add variety to my workouts.

Most of the time I don’t have a plan in mind, but I try to keep it to a free weight movement and a heavy kettlebell movement.

Today, I used my trap bar and one of my 32 kg kettlebells.

I warmed-up by deadlifting 135 x 5, and 185 x 5.  I then did 10 sets of 3 reps of 225.  It took around 40 minutes to do those.

I finished with heavy swings done for 3 sets of 10 R / 10 L  for a total of 60 reps.  I took about a minute of rest between sets.

That’s it for tax day.
