Which Wolf Are You Feeding?

kettlebell classes in novato californiaAn old Cherokee tale tells of a grandfather who was teaching life principles to his grandson.  The wise old Cherokee said, “Son, on the inside of every person a battle is raging between two wolves.  One wolf is evil.  It’s angry, jealous, unforgiving, proud and lazy.  The other wolf is good.  It’s filled with love, kindness, humility and self-control.

These two wolves are constantly fighting, the grandfather said.  The little boy thought about it, and said, “Grandfather, which wolf is going to win?”

Which wolf are you feeding?

Is it the lazy one? The jealous one?  The one waiting for something good to happen to them?

Or are you feeding the humble one?  The kind one?  The one with the self-control, willing to forego that comfy couch in order to exercise and maintain your health.  The one willing to honor your true self and make your body what you want it to be?

Are you going to feed the wolf waiting for the perfect moment to start your transformation?  The moment when everything works out right in order to have the time to do exactly what you planned?  When will that happen?

Or are you going to take what time you have and give it the best you’ve got?

Right now.

Perfect or not.

Some is better than none.

You have free time.  But, you’re going to have to ignore that lazy wolf and feed the wolf with self-control.  The one that knows what’s good for it.

And if you only have twenty or thirty minutes, then use those twenty or thirty minutes!  Yes, that new Art of Strength Providence DVD you just got calls for a forty-five minute workout.  Guess what?  There’s nothing set in stone that says you have to follow the entire workout.  If you only have twenty minutes, then do twenty minutes worth of Providence.

That’s twenty minutes of intense exercise that you weren’t getting while watching t.v or flipping through the latest gossip magazine.  At some point, you’ll have the forty-five minutes you need.  If you’ve built a base of twenty minute workouts then you’ll be ready to jump into a full Providence session and feed your good wolf.

Enter The Kettlebell Medium Day

We’re still doing four ladders of three rungs.  However I’ve moved up to a 20 kg kettlebell for my goblet squats and Val made a big step up to her 12 kg bell for her cleans and presses.

For our endurance work, the AOS ETK workbook calls for 50-rep swings for eight minutes with twenty seconds of rest between sets.  We started out with two-handed swings for our first set, then moved to one-handed sets of ten (10R/10L/10R/10L/5R/5L) for our remaining sets.  Our rest periods were closer to thirty seconds, but we still managed to get four sets of fifty for two hundred total swings.  Remember, this was a medium day.  (200 reps = medium?)

Anyhow, we’ll pick things back up on Saturday for our heavy day.
