Why Do I Feel So Good?

Endorphin: One of the body’s own painkillers, an opioid (morphine-like) chemical produced by the body that serves to suppress pain.

How was your evening?

Mine was great, fantastic even.

Why?  Good question.  Let’s break it down.

I left work at 4 and went straight to my new Chiropractor.  It’s been about 2 or 3 years since I last got adjusted and I have a few nagging little pains that I want to nip in the bud.  So he put me through some adjustments, ran me through some corrective movements and shoved me out the door.

I headed home and found a comfortable house with three children who weren’t fighting.  A miracle!  And and about time, too.

I changed my clothes and jumped right into my joint mobility work, followed by my regular warm-up.  I was working solo as my wife was at her office catching up her coaching.

I stayed with my 16 kilo kettlebell for goblet squats and halos, and hit 4 rounds of warm-up drills.  After resting for a few minutes, I set my timer for 5 minutes and ground out my turkish get-ups, getting 5 on each side today.  They were tough, but felt good.  I waited for a few more minutes before practicing just the first sit-up portion of the get-up.  I set the timer for 2:30 and got 10 reps on each side, starting with 10 left, followed by 10 right.  Practicing the individual parts of the TGU for reps will help smooth out your technique and make your weak points stronger.

I finished with Scott Sonnon’s compensatory cool-down movements (the third of the three DVD’s in his kettlebell series).

My wife got home just as I finished, and my daughter had dinner on the table at that same moment, too.  Broiled tri-tip, oven-browned fingerling potatoes, and fresh steamed spinach.  Topped it off with a glass of Cabernet.

I feel great both physically and mentally.  It’s 10:20 p.m. (pst) and I’m just about to get in bed.  The kids are asleep. Coffee’s ready for the morning, and life doesn’t get much better than this.

Why do I feel so good?

Regular exercise consisting of joint mobility work and hard lifting.   A good diet, a little vino, a loving wife and well-behaved children.

In short.  Balance.
