Girevoy Sport Revisited
It’s been a while since I practiced with Girevoy Sport methods…well, actually not that long, as Strength In Motion contains elements of GS through the use of timed sets and GS-type movements. However, my wife and I have been practicing with Hardstyle methods for some time now, so getting back into the GS style (economy of motion) is going to take a little bit of work.
I was watching a promo video of some of the Ice Chamber ladies in action, and was struck by how effortless good GS technique looks like. There’s one young lady on the left end of three, who’s doing cleans that are amazingly graceful. I mean, it’s like she’s laying a baby’s head in the crook of her arm every time she cleans the kettlebell. I’m jealous. I’m green with envy even. I wish my cleans popped up that smoothly.
Anyhow, we’ve got some work to do and it’s been a long time since my AKC cert in 2008, and my first run through the fitness manual in November of that year, so we eased back into the swing of things on level 1.
Again, my wife used her 8 kg and I began with my 16 kg. After a week off, the weights were light, but they were also just right for working on muscle memory for the clean, half-snatch and long cycle push press. The effort was enough to break a light sweat and it felt good to move with the weight. We finished our workout with the max reps for the time periods, so we’ll move up to level 2 on Wednesday.
For tomorrow, I’m going to do some heavier strength exercises using the program outlined in the AOS Resolution program.
