WKC Kettlebell Fitness – 52 Minutes of Fun

O.K., maybe fun is a bit of a stretch.  But it was nice to have the 2-minute rest periods in between the 4 minutes of work.

Today I began level 9.  Which means my workout looked like the following:

Jerk:  2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest; 2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest; 2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest – 192 reps total.

Snatch:  2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest; 2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest; 2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest – 192 reps total.

LCCJ: 2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest; 2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest; 2:00 R/2:00 L; 2:00 rest – 120 reps total.

If you’re wondering how the 30-second increase in work feels, it’s really not that bad.  In order to stick with completing the max reps (32) in the Jerk and Snatch in the 2-minute set, I set my gear up to help me keep from getting mentally overwhelmed with the numbers and time.

I set my Gymboss timer for 1:00 intervals and counted my sets down from 16.  When the timer beeped, I knew I was halfway done with that set, and should have been back at 16 or less at that point.  Then I just counted back down to 1 from 16.  When the timer beeped, I was done with one side and switched to do the other in the same fashion.

My long cycle was no different, except my max reps were 20 for the 2-minute time limit and I counted down from 10 for each minute.

Then I had a blessed 2-minute rest.  Sort of like a mini-vacation.  All-in-all, it wasn’t too bad, although I started to fatigue a bit by my first set of long cycle.  However, I knew that after I finished my first right and left set, I only had two more to go so I had to press on and finish up.

These workouts are not for wimps as they do challenge you.  I can tell you that when I was working out with free weights, I never would have even thought about trying to jerk a 35 pound dumbbell for 6 sets of 32 reps.  I have immense respect for my fellow Gireviks who can do that with the 24, 28, 32, and heavier kettlebells.

My wife worked out with me this evening after a prolonged layoff.  She used her 8 kg kettlebell.  She started with two sets of 35 swings (right and left) and finished with 3 sets each side of 15 presses.

Today was a very good day in that she finally found a new job after being unemployed for over a year.  Things are looking up and our kettlebell workouts are keeping us healthy and happy.
